What is a Mystery Shopper Essay?

The main advantage of a mystery shopper essay over a report is that it allows the mystery shopper to go beyond the constraints of a report by being able to give their own feedback, which can be very valuable for the mystery shopping company and their client.
The disadvantage, however, lies with the mystery shopping company.
They will need to spend more time on pulling the essay apart so the information remains standardised across many assignments.
So, if the mystery shopping company wants an immediate snapshot of what happened during the mystery shopper visit, an essay is unlikely to provide this.
What is a Mystery Shopper Report?
A mystery shopper report is a combination of question types. Rating scales, text boxes, percentages or marks out of ten are just some question formats you could expect.
The mystery shopper may also need to submit photos of their visit.
The great thing about mystery shopper reports is that they provide a quick, top-level overview of the findings which provides a summary of how the location is performing.
Although this saves time, this approach can be limited, as the user may be restricted by the questions in the report, and critical information may be missed.
Which is Best?
Both have their strengths and weaknesses. It really depends on what the mystery shopping company or their client is hoping to achieve.
A highly customer-focused environment may favour an essay type of approach. Whereas a service industry such as a car garage would probably benefit from a report more.
